Artifact: ITEC 7400 Unstructured Field Experience
Reflection:
The artifact “ITEC 7400 Unstructured Field Experience” was created in ITEC 7400 21st Century Teaching and Learning. This artifact was a summary of my field experience creating a presentation on the use of Remind101 as a classroom communication tool. Within the field experience, I reviewed the use of Remind101 and went through a basic troubleshooting process to prepare for issues that teachers could have utilizing the tool.
The element of Basic Troubleshooting under the Standard of Digital Learning Environments was mastered with this artifact in several different ways. While researching and preparing this presentation, I evaluated Remind101 for use in the classroom as a communication tool. While doing this, I set up a Remind101 account and registered myself and my own family. Once they were registered, I sent multiple test text messages to insure that the tool actually functions as it should. My husband is not as technically savvy, and he had some difficulty getting the registration set up. I walked him through how to register and save the number in his phone so that he would know who was texting him when reminders came through.
While completing this artifact, I learned a great deal about how to better explain how to use new technology to others. I utilized screen shots of various stages of setting up Remind101 and those were incorporated into my presentation. I also learned how to better troubleshoot simple technical software and hardware problems that my family encountered when test-driving the app for me. If I could change anything about this artifact, I would actually continue using it with my family. I have had great success utilizing it in my classroom, and students find the reminders helpful to them.
The work that went into creating this artifact will impact student learning, faculty development, and school improvement. Student learning is impacted by their ability to register for reminders to come to a device they use on a constant basis, their cell phones. This impact was evaluated by the increased number of on-time assignments submitted in my classroom this past year. Faculty development was impacted as I have been available for questions by faculty members on Remind101 throughout this school year, and several teachers have begun utilizing the tool and have sought me out for help with it. This impact can be evaluated by the presence of Remind101 information on an increased number of teachers’ blogs. School improvement has been impacted as one of the goals of our school has been to increase communication with parents and students, and Remind101 clearly allows this. The impact of this could be evaluated by analysis of school satisfaction surveys, focusing attention on communication questions.
