Artifact: SWOT Analysis
Reflection:
The artifact “SWOT Analysis” was created in ITEC 7410 Instructional Technology Leadership. This artifact was an evaluation of my school’s current vision, plan, and use of technology. I examined the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats that existed in a variety of areas relating to technology. What I found the most in this analysis is that although there are a number of technologies available to us at my high school, many teachers are not utilizing them. I relied on the school’s strategic plan and my own research into teacher attitudes towards new technology, which was conducted this spring.
The element of Strategic Planning under the Standard of Visionary Leadership was mastered with this artifact in several different ways. Through my SWOT analysis, I evaluated where we are presently at my high school, but I also offered some suggestions for a better design and implementation of technology including utilization of student owned technology in a BYOD capacity. Communication of a technology-infused strategic plan was addressed through advocacy for new professional development, which would communicate technology options to teachers. I also advocated for communication with the surrounding community businesses to attempt to gain more financial support for technology. Evaluation of the technology-infused strategic plan was accomplished throughout the SWOT as I evaluated many aspects of technology in our high school. Within the SWOT, I took initial steps to design and develop an action plan to help stakeholders facilitate the implementation of a technology-infused strategic plan by investigating issues and making recommendations for the future.
While completing this artifact, I learned a great deal about the different aspects included in evaluation of technology-infused strategic plans. What I was amazed by was how many different areas there are that we need to look into when we are implementing technology. It is not enough to simply provide technology for use in the classroom. We must also provide adequate professional development to implement that technology and sustain its implementation. If I could change anything in my analysis, I would incorporate additional teacher surveys; however, this was limited as the SWOT Analysis was done during the summer semester.
The work that went into creating this artifact will impact school improvement. My evaluation of the school technology plan will be shared with my principal, and I will be advocating for the implementation of a concrete technology plan for the school. I am looking forward to speaking with the principal and seeing if we can take technology in a new and innovative direction. As the school moves forward with addressing the needs identified in the SWOT, I will be able to assess the effectiveness of this process.
