Artifact: Engaged Learning Project
Reflection:
The artifact “Engaged Learning Project” was created in ITEC 7400 21st Century Teaching and Learning. This artifact was created to facilitate a several week unit in AP Psychology that would more truly engage students and allow for collaborative learning. In this project, students would be given a scenario with a “real” patient presenting for treatment of a real psychological problem. Students would then work collaboratively on a multimedia presentation to discuss treatment options for their patient and make recommendations on the most appropriate and efficient treatment.
The element of Classroom Management and Collaborative Learning under the Standard of Digital Learning Environments was mastered with this artifact in several different ways. In this project, I created digital tools and resources for students to utilize in the classroom as they addressed treatment for their patients. Time was also allowed in the classroom for students to work independently and collaboratively to research and recommend treatment. Students were then responsible for collaboratively creating a multimedia presentation for their classmates on appropriate and responsible treatment for their patients. While students are working independently and collaboratively, I will be moving throughout the classroom, maintaining control and facilitating collaborative work. Additionally, I will be available to answer questions and assist in finding relevant resources.
While completing this artifact, I learned a great deal about engaged learning. Although I have always considered my classroom to be fairly engaging, I realized that I need to increase collaboration and allow for students to work together to address real world issues. This project allows them to do so, and I am hoping to implement it this coming spring in my AP Psychology classes. For this artifact, I would change the interactions with actual professionals. The lesson plan calls for the teacher to access a psychologist or psychiatrist for students to consult with via a discussion board. However, I am not sure that this is perfectly feasible. The reality is that health professionals deal with a great number of emergency situations. I believe it would be more effective to make an appointment for a professional to be available to come in to classes or be accessible for a certain time period online for student consultation.
The work that went into creating this artifact will impact student learning as it will dramatically increase student collaboration within my classes. Students are social creatures and thrive on interaction. This project enables them to collaborate in class and online, thus reducing some of the anxiety experienced by shyer students. The impact on student learning will be evaluated through use of a rubric designed to measure student knowledge as exceeds, proficient, approaching, and needs improvement. Additionally, student learning impact will be evaluated by examination of the scores on the AP exam in abnormal psychology and treatment.
