Artifact: Class Website
Reflection:
The artifact “Class Website” was created over the course of the 2013-2014 school year. This artifact is a website that I created to help students keep up with daily assignments, upcoming projects, and end of the course/year review. I make it a point to post every day for every course so that students are consistently aware of what is going on in class even if they are absent. For each class, I also created pages within the website that have links to interesting websites or pertinent information specific to that course.
The element of Communication and Collaboration under the Standard of Digital Learning Environments was mastered with this artifact in several different ways. Students and parents are given instant access to course assignments, PowerPoints, projects, and review materials at their own convenience. Access is provided to my Remind101 account so that students and parents can receive reminder text messages from me. Additionally, other teachers utilize my website at times as well by simply providing a link to my pages, e.g. the Economics video page is linked to from the other Economics PLC members. Further, I am able to give access to my face-to-face course review materials to my Cobb Virtual Academy students through this website without the time consuming process of creating a new site. In terms of collaboration, parents and students are able to communicate with me through the blog. In the future, I plan to also utilize Twitter as a means of collaboration with students. Twitter will be the basis of our AP Psychology vocabulary words and examples by utilizing hashtags during the 2014-2015 school year.
Although I consider this particular artifact a work in progress, I have learned a great deal about how to effectively communicate and collaborate with students, parents, peers, and the larger community by focusing on updating this site on a daily to weekly basis. As a parent and a teacher, I know how frustrating it can be to feel as though you are in the dark on your child’s homework assignments. This website allows parents to actively participate in their children’s education. As I look towards next year, I know that I would like to expand my focus in this website into incorporating more than an occasional link to an interesting article. I would like to provide links on a weekly basis and connect that to the classroom by increasing student-led discussion of the links.
The work that went into creating this artifact will impact student learning and school improvement in several ways. Student learning is impacted by this site giving students the ability to consistently access their course work and review materials. This enables students to stay on track with the various courses even if they have emergencies and must be out. School improvement is impacted as one of our school’s primary visions deals with communication and collaboration with students, parents, and the community. My site helps to facilitate this goal by giving total access to what is going on in my classroom to students, their parents, and the community as a whole.
