Artifact: Data Overview
Reflection:
The artifact “Data Overview” was created in ITEC 7305 Data Analysis and School Improvement. This artifact was a cohesive view of my school’s demographics, overall test performance, and Economics EOCT performance. Within the overview, I compared the performance of different races and ethnicities and also examined how my school compared to the district and the state.
The element of Data Analysis under the Standard of Teaching, Learning, and Assessment was mastered with this artifact in several different ways. First, within this artifact, I collected, analyzed, and interpreted student achievement data. I collected data on student and faculty demographics, Georgia High School Writing Test performance, and EOCT performance. I analyzed and interpreted this data through my presentation. Second, within this artifact, I demonstrated my ability to communicate the findings of this analysis and interpretation by structuring the data overview as a faculty presentation. I will be giving this presentation to my principal in a few weeks during pre-planning. Finally, within this artifact, I made some recommendations for appropriate interventions to improve instructional practices and maximize student learning, such as examining how culturally appropriate our teaching models are. I will also continue to utilize appropriate interventions in my own classroom to remedy some of these issues.
While completing this artifact, I learned a great deal about data analysis. I was truly surprised by the wealth of information available to everyone via the Georgia Department of Education website. It was overwhelming at times, but I think that I did a good job of narrowing down the data on my school into a manageable chunk. If I could do anything differently on this artifact, I wish I had been able to use more recent data on my school. With the high school out for the summer, a compacted Instructional Technology class time, and some administrators on vacation, this was difficult.
The work that went into creating this artifact will impact student learning as I will be utilizing the information in my own classroom to influence my teaching practices. The impact on student learning can be evaluated by examining my EOCT scores in December and again in May. This artifact will also impact faculty development as I will be offering this presentation to teachers in my department during pre-planning. That impact can be assessed via a teacher survey in December and/or May on culturally responsive teaching practices.
