1.3 Policies, Procedures, Programs & Funding
Candidates research, recommend, and implement policies, procedures, programs and funding strategies to support implementation of the shared vision represented in the school, district, state, and federal technology plans and guidelines. Funding strategies may include the development, submission, and evaluation of formal grant proposals. (PSC 1.3/ISTE 1c)
Artifact: Evaluating an Emerging Technology
Reflection:
The artifact “Evaluating an Emerging Technology” was created in ITEC 7445 Multimedia and Web Design. This artifact was an evaluation of the use of e-readers in schools. In this presentation, I examined two different e-readers, the Barnes and Noble Nook and the Amazon Kindle, for use in schools as a replacement for traditional textbooks.
The element of Policies, Procedures, Programs, and Funding under the Standard of Visionary Leadership was mastered with this artifact in several different ways. While evaluating an emerging technology, I researched and recommended the use of e-readers in schools as a replacement for traditional textbooks. This supported the shared vision of the school and the county at large to provide equitable access to electronics and technology for all students. Within funding strategies, I recommended that new textbooks purchasing funding be shifted to purchasing e-readers for all students over the course of a few years. Within my evaluation of this emerging technology, I outlined specific procedures for implementing e-readers in the classroom with a rolling schedule for integration into the classroom and teachers teaching each other how to utilize them. In terms of policies, I would recommend that committees be formed at each school to dictate policies that would be in line with county-level policies.
While completing this artifact, I learned a great deal about the challenges of coming up with an innovative way to integrate technology into schools. I know that I have been frustrated before about how long it takes to get newer technologies into schools. After completing this artifact, I have a much deeper understanding of why this process takes a while as it is so in-depth. If I were to redo this artifact, I would definitely adjust the funding aspect of the assignment. Simply moving money from one place to another was not a sufficient response for how to fund e-readers. A grant proposal may have been a better option.
The work that went into creating this artifact will impact school improvement and student learning as I am now more familiar with steps needed to research and recommend new technologies for schools and districts. Before creating this artifact, I had a limited view on how new technologies were implemented in schools. This has broadened my perspective, and I know in the future when I am proposing new technologies for my school or district how incredibly important the funding aspect of the proposals is.
