Artifact: Diversity Blog Posting
Reflection:
The artifact “Diversity Blog Entry” was created in ITEC 7430 Internet Tools in the Classroom. This artifact is a blog entry that I created to examine means of promoting diversity, cultural understanding, and global awareness in the classroom. In this entry, I examined the use of CNN’s Student News, an article from eHow on meeting the diverse needs of your students in the classroom, and another article from About.com on how to increase interest in your blog from a diverse population. Overall, I came to the conclusion that although I do attempt to address diversity in my classroom, I need to move in to a more immediate feedback option when I post things on my blog/class website.
The element of Diversity, Cultural Understanding, and Global Awareness under the Standard of Digital Citizenship and Responsibility was mastered with this artifact in several different ways. In this blog entry, I addressed supporting diverse student needs and increasing global awareness by incorporating news from around the world from Student News on www.cnn.com, and then letting students choose other videos to watch and discuss. This took place primarily in my Sociology class and was utilized to examine sociological issues in the world. Utilizing news stories allowed my students to become more intricately involved in the goings on of the world as a whole. I also addressed enhancing cultural understanding by advocating for a team approach between your own classroom and another around the world or even around the country.
Through my creation of this artifact, I learned a great deal about actual steps of action for increasing diversity, cultural understanding, and global awareness. I was a bit surprised that I did not have as good of a grasp on these actions as I thought I had. It is one thing to understand the need for global awareness and cultural understanding and another to follow through and actually explore it in an in-depth manner. One thing that I would change in this artifact is that I wish I had followed through on immediately seeking out a sister class in another part of the country or the world. I will be working on that this summer to give my students a window into another life.
The work that went into creating this artifact could impact student learning, faculty development, and school improvement as a whole. I do not think any teacher is a stranger to the concepts of diversity, cultural understanding, and global awareness, but like me, I am sure some of us have not gotten into the in-depth examination of these that is so necessary to truly promote the concepts in our classrooms. When we reach out to other cultures, we make it okay for our students to truly accept themselves and others. The impact of this artifact could be evaluated by a student survey on various world issues at the end of the semester.
